Eugenia “Genie” Clark, Ichthyologist and Marine Biologist

A pioneer of scuba diving for research, “The Shark Lady” was the founding director of Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, where her seven decade career expanded our knowledge of many ocean species, especially sharks. She proved that lemon sharks could be taught to press a target for food, challenging the perception of the shark as a mindless monster. She continued her research and scuba diving until the age of 92!
